FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE 2002-2004

Is the title for this piece of work, and it is the first in a series of five pieces of work that are all related too each other in as much that there is a member of an English Progressive rock band featured on each individual piece,This band went through various names such as “The screaming Abdabs”, the Tea set and sigma six though they were primarily a singles with hits such as “see Emily play” becoming the darlings of the London underground scene in the late 1960’s, their lead singer over indulging on LSD and eventually leaving the band to live as a recluse in his home town of Cambridge The rest of the band went on to have massive success with albums such as “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall” Becoming one of the biggest selling, most influential bands of the last 40 years. For more information on the band and their history please refer to other work by the same artist entitled “Thank you.”

Apart from women of which something shall be written about later on. Perhaps the strongest theme in this piece and recurring throughout is the strong theme of death even the title suggests such “From the cradle to the Grave.” The image used on this canvas to symbolize that thing called death is the guy holding a hang mans noose is from an article regarding the Ogoni tribe of Nigeria and their ongoing struggle against Shell oil and the exploitation of natural resources and abuses of human rights in their homeland.

Anyway rather than write huge amounts of stuff here about who and what is displayed here which would take an absolute age and is actually rather unnecessary. It is said one picture can speak a thousand words and saying that apart from a who’s who of whats featured here enough has probably been said.

As was mentioned earlier this was originally started and intended to be a single piece of work to pass the time during a period of change If anybody had made mention that there would be continuation into several other pieces of work all related to this one, there would have been loud laughter and words similar to nonsense being uttered. It took 4 years to realize this unforeseen dream as subsequent work shows.

For years before I even considered being an artist I collected loads of old magazines and similar stuff not on any particular subject matter and never for any particularly good reason well the reason was their just not realized at the time. For all that collecting and collating there is now an extensive piece of ready made and recycled art.

During the time all this old paper was in my possession I would read and re-read all those old articles and magazines some of some of this old stuff would and did adorn my bedroom walls here is more than just old pieces of paper stuck on a canvas, here is part of myself and has been part of my living and my breathing for a long while with some of the material used having been in my possession for 15 years or more before my knowing what to do with such. As a consequence of this keeping much time though in essence actually very little was given to reading and re-reading that which had already been read.

Take for example “I believed in the fuhrer” it runs down the right hand side of the canvas you cannot miss it. This article came from an article in the British newspaper “The Daily Telegraph.” It regarded a certain Henry Mettleman who served in Hitlers army during WW2,his book Through hell for Hitler is interesting for what it has to say from the perspective of the ordinary soldier who sees the folly of what he is serving the hard way. This item found it’s way here from a flirtation with right wing politics then I lost my faith. which is not the reason why Pope John Paul 2 appears here.

On a different subject Sophie Dahl was recovered from a copy of the Daily Mail the pictures from an article regarding the dress sense of the French and how a girl would always check her stocking seams to be straight.

Its not only news print here there is one photocopy of Syd Barrett sent to me by a friend in Bulgaria, thank you my friend you know who you are it’s something to remember you by, and a small handmade painting of a heart cut out and made by myself.

Upside down bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey the brew from Lynchburg Tennessee, that is mellowed drop by drop through ten feet of charcoal for that distinctive smoothness Mr. Jack first used this process over seven generations ago and the same process is still used today. You can see a picture of Mr. Jack Daniel again on the right hand side and there shall be something more written about him and his product later on.

Georges Escoffier known at the time as the emperor of chefs is said to have employed Ho Chi Minh the Vietnamese revolutionary and statesman as a pastry chef in Paris.talking about revolution

there are several people of that type here both male and female and of differing nationalities some used peace others not so much but their goals where the same ideal if you can spot them thats great if you know their names even better in any case each is listed here.

A Priest holding aloft money, taking from the poor to feed the rich, there again this could be construed as something else separate from blind religious dogma.

She is not thinking about you though you may be and probably are.

Why the hamster, well this was story about a small furry rodent that died after a balloon burst I guesses it died of shock, actually the story goes a bit deeper than that, and for the answer you will have to speak to Leire.

Syd Barrett has his image on this work a couple of times or so due to the influence and legacy he left behind even though he ceased to be musically creative pretty well almost thirty years ago, without him the world would be a poorer place though in saying that he passed away in 2006 his memory still lives on. David Gilmour was a childhood friend of Syd and replaced him in the band when the latter succumbed to mental ill health, Gilmour plays guitar just like his friend did and their contribution is celebrated elsewhere in work by this artist.

The first image to be put down here was that of Ian Curtis of Joy Division who had a voice described as holy, and more shall be written about the person who said that further down the line

The Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader to the worlds Buddhists and his use of non-violence is a shining example to everyone, this particular image was taken from an interview entitled “Between a rock and a hard place.” in London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, the article was by a Nigel Farndale who does not feature in my work even though I am sure it could be arranged.

James Marshall Hendrix man, myth and legend.

Bob Dylan read on

There are a few members of the musical fraternity here and each one of them has left their legacy and legend on this earth and whatever people say, they all died at the right time and that is why their names live on indeed some of them are still alive.Frank Sinatra gets a place here cause of this the song played as I picked out the picture I might say I was not looking for it at the time it just happened to be there and the music was a simple confirmation that I was supposed to use it there and now.

Saddam Hussein “how long can the man in black hold on to power.” It comes from a news article on the man,if you look closely you can see a rifle butt tucked into his shoulder which is pointing upwards at Mr. Jack Daniel who’s birth date is debated and is generally accepted to be in September and because of this the whole month is given over to him, one thing is certain he died on October 9th 1911 after kicking his office safe which resulted in a broken toe that went septic and which eventually killed him. Mr. Jack is buried in Lynchburg town cemetery where he founded the nations oldest registered distillery producing a sour mash whiskey that is completely different to Bourbon whiskey.

More than one person featured here has been listed in Time Magazines people of the century that being the 20th amongst these luminaries artists, physicists and politicians and sportsmen.

Muhammad Ali formerly known as Cassius Clay now known as the greatest.

Underneath this image of Dwight D Eisenhower there is an advert for a now defunct advertising company,

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a

theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron. “I should like to write more on this man at a later time.”

In the meantime: Margaret Thatcher,Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery.

Spike Milligan,Olga Korbut,Thor Heyerdahl and Santa Claus one of these people is a fictional character a patriarchal festive authority figure who allegedly flies around in a sleigh powered by Reindeer and goes down chimneys ”What shit.

Charlotte church is here for no other reason than that she is.

How do we define beauty in a world of fake tits and plastic surgery surgery what is it all about? Is artificiality beautiful? What defines beauty.

Both Charles Bronson and Burt Reynolds were and are great actors, Bronson died a couple of years ago he is shown here totally ignoring the entreaties of Diana princess of Wales shown here waving a knife at him in the film Death Wish she never actually appeared in the film and she never starred alongside Mr Bronson either.

The division bell” Is a 1994 release by British progressive rock band Pink Floyd.

As for the rest of it how many can you name?

THE 12 APOSTLES

12-apostles

The last time anything was written on this subject was several years ago around about 3 1/2 years ago to be precise and do you know how much I have missed writing in that time it was only the other day yesterday to be precise that I read a face book entry posted by a lady she is on the ASD spectrum sort of thing and it just felt write was the right time the stars and the moon being in the right place sort of thing which compelled me to write, it was not very much around fifteen lines or something but the difference it has made maybe it’s the ASD in my own make up kicking in the enthusiasm for new things can be quite overwhelming at times dropping everything else in pursuit of something new and in saying that a change is what is needed too much paining well not too much its simply time to find a new avenue of creativity and I guess this is it.

aries   Aries: the cardinal fire sign the first sign in the zodiacal year

Introductions over this piece is more to do with Religion and Astrology and to be precise the 12 astrological houses and Catholicism having been raised according to the teachings of the church of Rome it was I do not have to say quite a big part of my life for quite a little time these days and for quite a while now it has not been I find Astrology more interesting instead and occasionally even find myself reading the horoscopes though in practice it seems  easier not to perhaps it makes for less to think about not being able to see the wood for the trees, that sort of thing.

taurus Taurus: the 2nd sign of the zodiac the fixed earth sign

So anyway the 12 apostles of Jesus are or more correctly were: Simon Peter, Andrew, James (the son of Zebedee), John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James  (the son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot

gemini Gemini: the 3rd sign of the zodiac the mutable air sign

I know this not because I have a good memory which I do but more so that I had a look on a popular search engine and got my results there, I could have looked in the  bible however I am quite comfortable and the bible is over there somewhere.

cancer Cancer: the 4th sign represented by the Crab

So what has this got to do with Astrology?  Well that I shall leave you to look at and see for yourselves in the meantime here is a painting from a few years ago.

jesus-cursing-the-fig-tree

Jesus cursing the Fig tree 2011

This picture was chosen cause I prefer it to that of the last supper and I was pruning back the Fig tree in the garden a couple of days ago so its nice to keep things in context this is   the scene in the gospels of Matthew and Mark  but not in those of Luke and John where Jesus and his apostles come across a fig tree with no fruit as it was out of season this incurred Jesus’ anger and caused him to say.

leo  Leo: the fifth sign of the zodiac represented by the glyph of the Lions mane

“May no one eat from you again.”  Sure enough the next time Jesus and his followers passed that way again the Fig tree was withered up and brown.

I like bible stories and indeed I won the religious studies prize one year at school actually that’s a lie I won the Divinity cup as well but that’s another story. What the school teachers failed to mention was anything to do with Astrology and the 12 signs of the zodiac  that followed their leader around the place in this case the sun but wait a minute is one of the many names of Jesus the sun/son of God or am I simply reading too much into this story and now dreaming up some silly conspiracy idea  at this rate there may well be  mention of King Arthur and the knights of the round table there were 12 of them as well but again that’s another story and one I am sure most people are familiar with enough films have been made on the subject probably as many that have been made about Jesus himself.

virgo  Virgo: the sixth sign of the astrological calendar the sign of the virgin and the harvest.

So 12 apostles and twelve zodiac signs in fact the number 12 or twelfth appears 187 times in the bible some sources state 212 take your pick either way but that’s quite a lot however this is not a counting game.

Believe in astrology or not it is still quite an interesting subject to behold and when we put names to the signs you begin to see a whole lot more and lots of things come together and make a whole lot more sense.

There is a lot more to be written on this subject but it may not necessarily be the next thing to be written about.

A FEW YEARS AGO

A few years ago 3 1/2 years ago to be precise I wrote a blog item that said I was going to be getting rid of this blog or at least changing it to a different title something away from the name being used at the time which has now since been got rid of in its entirety cause it did not match the person who wrote it and it was for want of a better word plain crap  and because crap is not really so becoming it has been changed actually quite a lot has changed this site no longer babbles about conspiracy theories, politics and the like life is simply to short for such nonsense and there is now a degree course to be considered which believe it or not is a little bit more important than working out who killed JFK whether the royal family and the Vatican are engaged in sinister satanic goings on if they are good for them there are more interesting things to write about. it would seem that art is more interesting whether that art involves politics, religion, spirituality, environmental concerns or indeed auto-biographical stuff is lets say entirely coincidental.

Sometimes even the subject of Aspergers may come up I have not had  any official diagnosis though several “experts.” shall we call them have identified me as being one of those happy people who has this condition/syndrome attempting to get a specialist to have a look has proved so far to be a little challenging so in the meantime the bits I do not like I am working on and getting rid of the wrinkles a bit like ironing your shirt before an  interview.

It would also be nice to think that creative writing here will also tune up my essay writing skills which are lets say in need of a little polishing it being a few years since I last attended any educational course.

In the meantime heres a painting from around 15 years ago it was great fun to create and hugely satisfying apologies if its a bit off centre and needs trimming a better image shall replace it in the next few days.
