UPON MISSING SOMEONE

Untitled

I miss her terribly, I miss her so much it hurts and when I ought to be knuckling down and working which I am, you see as she went into this dark place, I guess it was a case of doing too much too soon and what with her having Bi –polar it proved a little too much and coupled with her Aspergers it must have made things really stress full. Coincidentally I had managed to slice my arm up at work in fact I came home to her decision to cancel her trip over here that afternoon, she had had a deep conversation with her psychiatrist the previous evening, who seriously advised against travelling. I think she was more concerned for the bandaging around my forearm, than I was, to me it was an embuggerance to her it represented a whole lot more, everything that had happened the cancelled holiday, everything, in between laughing at the bandages and inspecting the photo’s of the scratch and recalling how it happened, she was crying her eyes out and what with my attempts at calming and reassuring her, maybe her anxiety was working overtime that day I don’t know. What was for certain my desire to kick myself for being a fool and letting myself into getting into this state was something else. The initial desire to kick myself for getting into this state was thwarted by the belief I had done enough damage without adding to it.

So it is better just to be productive or maybe even creative it may even do some good,  cause right now I feel as grumpy as f&*% it’s like having this dark cloud hanging over my head and if I feel awful, God knows what it’s like in her shoes. My mood  is not helped by the weather which for all the jokes about the weather in this country is really living up to its reputation it is almost so foul as to not want to go out at all yet  there is stuff to be done and work to go to anything right now seems better than sitting around doing nothing and  thinking about seeing if she has answered my last message the one I sent this morning even though I know she has not cause I checked less than five minutes ago and something says better take another look, She will read them in due course I am sure when she is out of that place and gets her phone back I know she hasn’t  it’s not because she is not speaking to me, it’s because she is in hospital and not even in hospital over here it would not be half as bad if I could go visit her but that’s not the case cause right now my beloved is somewhere in Ithaca New York state and whilst Oxford is a beautiful city it is a million miles away or at least might as well be. We were due to be in each other’s arms this coming Monday and now that is not the case, it is not going to be so and that hurts when we are going to be in each other’s arms is another matter altogether she was entertaining September though the universe (Read credit union/bank) was not having it that way and that is probably just as well.

She said to me she ought to be ought within a week or so, part of me says be out sooner and that quiet steady voice says let her come out when she is ready. God knows but I am not really in any state to do much right now all I can think of is to just get on and do stuff not to worry and just be in the present as much as is possible which when there is not a ton of shit to think about is a fairly simple exercise, and when there is a ton of the brown stuff a well nigh impossible task but still it must be done and indeed it shall be done for that is the way forward. Worrying will gain nothing, nothing of any use so it is easier just to be and let things be, the sun will shine when the sun is ready to shine, everything happens for a reason, and these things have happened to make us stop and think to rest a while, relax, think things over and let things heal.

And all this week it is mental health awareness week, if you read this please say to her in your own way that I love her

UNTITLED

This article is titled “untitled” simply cause right now there is nothing in my mind to fill that space, maybe it shall come later on.

I have recently started painting again after what has seemed like years when in fact it has been just a couple of months  the main reason I guess is I am now studying for a degree and where this could take up a large amount of time it does not cause I am not the most dedicated of students still I enjoy the subject(s) I have chosen and that is what counts  the most.

No the real reason for the lack of smearing various pigments across a canvas has been one of love pure and simple that of a new relationship that of getting to know someone special, someone kind gentle learning to be a better man to be a better person though work may well have something to do with that too you see after a long time of having no job I now have a job and after a fairly long time of being single that condition has been disqualified too  and indeed as much as I enjoy writing I get the inspiration to write more and not just in terms of study but more on the creative side too. We have known each other since March probably/maybe earlier than that we have been seeing each other since April she asked me if I wanted to be her boyfriend.

The art of letter writing I mean a real old fashioned letter on paper or card with pen and ink with bits crossed out and spelling mistakes then finding the stamps to send it on its way it means so much more to give and receive in this way than some email.

I would accompany this writing with a painting and I shall its just not ready yet.

The 12 apostles (revisited)

LIBRA

Libra is the 7th sign of the zodiac and is represented by the balance. The sun is in this sign of the autumnal equinox from around September 22nd to October 23rd. the symbol of the scales is based on the scales of justice held by Themis the Greek personification of divine law and custom. Libra is the only zodiacal sign represented by an inanimate object whereas the other 11 signs are represented by either an animal or mythological character.

SCORPIO

Scorpio is the 8th sign of the Zodiac the sign of death, destruction and regeneration and is generally represented in Astrology by the Scorpion Though other  animalistic  symbols associated with this sign have been known to include the Wolf or the eagle (Phoenix) this sign is known to be the most intense of the Zodiac signs with the main theme of death destruction and rebirth in its astrological make up and  coming in at the time of the Autumn this ought be no real surprise  each of the signs representing the time of year in which they appear the sun coming into this sign from October 23nd to November 22rd. Scorpio is one of the three water signs the others being Cancer and Pisces. The symbol of the Scorpion is based on Scorpius a giant Scorpion sent By Gaia to kill Orion.

SAGITARIUS

Sagittarius is the 9th sign of the Zodiac with the sun being in this sign from November 22nd to December 21st .  Sagittarius is the mutable fire sign and is represented by the Centaur Chiron the mythological half human half horse creature of Greek myth the learned healer whose higher intelligence   bridges heaven and earth. This sign is represented by the bow and arrow which says a lot about the sign that they can be incredibly violent, wise brave and or mild. Sagittarius is said to be the most philosophical of the signs.

CAPRICORN

Capricorn is the 10th sign of the Zodiacal calendar and is symbolised by the sea goat those born under this sign are said to be the determined of all the signs and have an especial love of music they are the cardinal sign of the earth triplicate and their polar opposite is that of cancer. The sun enters  the sign around 22nd December and exits about  January 19th. Their weaknesses are said to be an inability to forgive those who have wronged them, can be condescending and expect the worst.  They are said to like tradition and quality craftsmanship amongst other things.capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn.

AQUARIUS

Aquarius is the fixed sign of the air triplicate  with its symbol being that of the water carier. It is the polar opposite of the fixed fire sign of Leo with the sun entering this sign around january 20th and exiting into Pisces February 18th. This sign is ruled by the planets Uranus and Saturn. The sign is said to be characterised by Running from emotional expression, and can be temperamental and aloof. They like to have fun with friends, help others and are said to good listeners. They can be progressive, original independent and humanitarian though the opposite may also be true.

PISCES

Finally the 12 sign of the zodiac is that of the fishes swimming opposite to each other and is the sign of Pisces the mutable water sign,in the zodiacal calendar it sits opposite Virgo the Mutuble Earth sign. Colours associated with Pisces areviolet purple and sea green and as would be expected with a sign with such a strong connection to water this sign is known for its liking for oceans rivers and lakes. Pisces is governed by Jupiter and unsurprisingly Neptune. They are known to be compassionate ,artistic  and intuitive individuals.

FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE

FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE 2002-2004

Is the title for this piece of work, and it is the first in a series of five pieces of work that are all related too each other in as much that there is a member of an English Progressive rock band featured on each individual piece,This band went through various names such as “The screaming Abdabs”, the Tea set and sigma six though they were primarily a singles with hits such as “see Emily play” becoming the darlings of the London underground scene in the late 1960’s, their lead singer over indulging on LSD and eventually leaving the band to live as a recluse in his home town of Cambridge The rest of the band went on to have massive success with albums such as “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall” Becoming one of the biggest selling, most influential bands of the last 40 years. For more information on the band and their history please refer to other work by the same artist entitled “Thank you.”

Apart from women of which something shall be written about later on. Perhaps the strongest theme in this piece and recurring throughout is the strong theme of death even the title suggests such “From the cradle to the Grave.” The image used on this canvas to symbolize that thing called death is the guy holding a hang mans noose is from an article regarding the Ogoni tribe of Nigeria and their ongoing struggle against Shell oil and the exploitation of natural resources and abuses of human rights in their homeland.

Anyway rather than write huge amounts of stuff here about who and what is displayed here which would take an absolute age and is actually rather unnecessary. It is said one picture can speak a thousand words and saying that apart from a who’s who of whats featured here enough has probably been said.

As was mentioned earlier this was originally started and intended to be a single piece of work to pass the time during a period of change If anybody had made mention that there would be continuation into several other pieces of work all related to this one, there would have been loud laughter and words similar to nonsense being uttered. It took 4 years to realize this unforeseen dream as subsequent work shows.

For years before I even considered being an artist I collected loads of old magazines and similar stuff not on any particular subject matter and never for any particularly good reason well the reason was their just not realized at the time. For all that collecting and collating there is now an extensive piece of ready made and recycled art.

During the time all this old paper was in my possession I would read and re-read all those old articles and magazines some of some of this old stuff would and did adorn my bedroom walls here is more than just old pieces of paper stuck on a canvas, here is part of myself and has been part of my living and my breathing for a long while with some of the material used having been in my possession for 15 years or more before my knowing what to do with such. As a consequence of this keeping much time though in essence actually very little was given to reading and re-reading that which had already been read.

Take for example “I believed in the fuhrer” it runs down the right hand side of the canvas you cannot miss it. This article came from an article in the British newspaper “The Daily Telegraph.” It regarded a certain Henry Mettleman who served in Hitlers army during WW2,his book Through hell for Hitler is interesting for what it has to say from the perspective of the ordinary soldier who sees the folly of what he is serving the hard way. This item found it’s way here from a flirtation with right wing politics then I lost my faith. which is not the reason why Pope John Paul 2 appears here.

On a different subject Sophie Dahl was recovered from a copy of the Daily Mail the pictures from an article regarding the dress sense of the French and how a girl would always check her stocking seams to be straight.

Its not only news print here there is one photocopy of Syd Barrett sent to me by a friend in Bulgaria, thank you my friend you know who you are it’s something to remember you by, and a small handmade painting of a heart cut out and made by myself.

Upside down bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey the brew from Lynchburg Tennessee, that is mellowed drop by drop through ten feet of charcoal for that distinctive smoothness Mr. Jack first used this process over seven generations ago and the same process is still used today. You can see a picture of Mr. Jack Daniel again on the right hand side and there shall be something more written about him and his product later on.

Georges Escoffier known at the time as the emperor of chefs is said to have employed Ho Chi Minh the Vietnamese revolutionary and statesman as a pastry chef in Paris.talking about revolution

there are several people of that type here both male and female and of differing nationalities some used peace others not so much but their goals where the same ideal if you can spot them thats great if you know their names even better in any case each is listed here.

Why the hamster, well this was story about a small furry rodent that died after a balloon burst I guesses it died of shock, actually the story goes a bit deeper than that, and for the answer you will have to speak to Leire.

Syd Barrett has his image on this work a couple of times or so due to the influence and legacy he left behind even though he ceased to be musically creative pretty well almost thirty years ago, without him the world would be a poorer place though in saying that he passed away in 2006 his memory still lives on. David Gilmour was a childhood friend of Syd and replaced him in the band when the latter succumbed to mental ill health, Gilmour plays guitar just like his friend did and their contribution is celebrated elsewhere in work by this artist.

The first image to be put down here was that of Ian Curtis of Joy Division who had a voice described as holy, and more shall be written about the person who said that further down the line

The Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader to the worlds Buddhists and his use of non-violence is a shining example to everyone, this particular image was taken from an interview entitled “Between a rock and a hard place.” in London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, the article was by a Nigel Farndale who does not feature in my work even though I am sure it could be arranged.

Bob Dylan read on

There are a few members of the musical fraternity here and each one of them has left their legacy and legend on this earth and whatever people say, they all died at the right time and that is why their names live on indeed some of them are still alive.Frank Sinatra gets a place here cause of this the song played as I picked out the picture I might say I was not looking for it at the time it just happened to be there and the music was a simple confirmation that I was supposed to use it there and now.

Saddam Hussein “how long can the man in black hold on to power.” It comes from a news article on the man,if you look closely you can see a rifle butt tucked into his shoulder which is pointing upwards at Mr. Jack Daniel who’s birth date is debated and is generally accepted to be in September and because of this the whole month is given over to him, one thing is certain he died on October 9th 1911 after kicking his office safe which resulted in a broken toe that went septic and which eventually killed him. Mr. Jack is buried in Lynchburg town cemetery where he founded the nations oldest registered distillery producing a sour mash whiskey that is completely different to Bourbon whiskey.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. THE 12 APOSTLES

12-apostles

The last time anything was written on this subject was several years ago around about 3 1/2 years ago to be precise and do you know how much I have missed writing in that time it was only the other day yesterday to be precise that I read a face book entry posted by a lady she is on the ASD spectrum sort of thing and it just felt write was the right time the stars and the moon being in the right place sort of thing which compelled me to write, it was not very much around fifteen lines or something but the difference it has made maybe it’s the ASD in my own make up kicking in the enthusiasm for new things can be quite overwhelming at times dropping everything else in pursuit of something new and in saying that a change is what is needed too much paining well not too much its simply time to find a new avenue of creativity and I guess this is it.

aries   Aries: the cardinal fire sign the first sign in the zodiacal year

Introductions over this piece is more to do with Religion and Astrology and to be precise the 12 astrological houses and Catholicism having been raised according to the teachings of the church of Rome it was I do not have to say quite a big part of my life for quite a little time these days and for quite a while now it has not been I find Astrology more interesting instead and occasionally even find myself reading the horoscopes though in practice it seems  easier not to perhaps it makes for less to think about not being able to see the wood for the trees, that sort of thing.

taurus Taurus: the 2nd sign of the zodiac the fixed earth sign

So anyway the 12 apostles of Jesus are or more correctly were: Simon Peter, Andrew, James (the son of Zebedee), John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James  (the son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot

gemini Gemini: the 3rd sign of the zodiac the mutable air sign

I know this not because I have a good memory which I do but more so that I had a look on a popular search engine and got my results there, I could have looked in the  bible however I am quite comfortable and the bible is over there somewhere.

cancer Cancer: the 4th sign represented by the Crab

So what has this got to do with Astrology?  Well that I shall leave you to look at and see for yourselves in the meantime here is a painting from a few years ago.

jesus-cursing-the-fig-tree

Jesus cursing the Fig tree 2011

This picture was chosen cause I prefer it to that of the last supper and I was pruning back the Fig tree in the garden a couple of days ago so its nice to keep things in context this is   the scene in the gospels of Matthew and Mark  but not in those of Luke and John where Jesus and his apostles come across a fig tree with no fruit as it was out of season this incurred Jesus’ anger and caused him to say.

leo  Leo: the fifth sign of the zodiac represented by the glyph of the Lions mane

“May no one eat from you again.”  Sure enough the next time Jesus and his followers passed that way again the Fig tree was withered up and brown.

I like bible stories and indeed I won the religious studies prize one year at school actually that’s a lie I won the Divinity cup as well but that’s another story. What the school teachers failed to mention was anything to do with Astrology and the 12 signs of the zodiac  that followed their leader around the place in this case the sun but wait a minute is one of the many names of Jesus the sun/son of God or am I simply reading too much into this story and now dreaming up some silly conspiracy idea  at this rate there may well be  mention of King Arthur and the knights of the round table there were 12 of them as well but again that’s another story and one I am sure most people are familiar with enough films have been made on the subject probably as many that have been made about Jesus himself.

virgo  Virgo: the sixth sign of the astrological calendar the sign of the virgin and the harvest.

So 12 apostles and twelve zodiac signs in fact the number 12 or twelfth appears 187 times in the bible some sources state 212 take your pick either way but that’s quite a lot however this is not a counting game.

Believe in astrology or not it is still quite an interesting subject to behold and when we put names to the signs you begin to see a whole lot more and lots of things come together and make a whole lot more sense.

There is a lot more to be written on this subject but it may not necessarily be the next thing to be written about.

A FEW YEARS AGO

A few years ago 3 1/2 years ago to be precise I wrote a blog item that said I was going to be getting rid of this blog or at least changing it to a different title something away from the name being used at the time which has now since been got rid of in its entirety cause it did not match the person who wrote it and it was for want of a better word plain crap  and because crap is not really so becoming it has been changed actually quite a lot has changed this site no longer babbles about conspiracy theories, politics and the like life is simply to short for such nonsense and there is now a degree course to be considered which believe it or not is a little bit more important than working out who killed JFK whether the royal family and the Vatican are engaged in sinister satanic goings on if they are good for them there are more interesting things to write about. it would seem that art is more interesting whether that art involves politics, religion, spirituality, environmental concerns or indeed auto-biographical stuff is lets say entirely coincidental.

Sometimes even the subject of Aspergers may come up I have not had  any official diagnosis though several “experts.” shall we call them have identified me as being one of those happy people who has this condition/syndrome attempting to get a specialist to have a look has proved so far to be a little challenging so in the meantime the bits I do not like I am working on and getting rid of the wrinkles a bit like ironing your shirt before an  interview.

It would also be nice to think that creative writing here will also tune up my essay writing skills which are lets say in need of a little polishing it being a few years since I last attended any educational course.

In the meantime heres a painting from around 15 years ago it was great fun to create and hugely satisfying apologies if its a bit off centre and needs trimming a better image shall replace it in the next few days.

on pink floyd

“Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air”

So goes the first line of Pink Floyd’s song echoes taken from their album meddle I like the tune and Albatrosses too this is a continuation on that theme.
I have listened to the music of Pink Floyd since I can remember and probably a little bit before that too as some of what I remember is not clear as some of the Pink Floyd that I have listened too. I have not had so much to do with Albatrosses just some dreams and a couple of paintings when they gave me inspiration and still are the dreams are interesting flying over restless heaving oceans and seeking always seeking for something lost or that which is not yet found.
It is said that the wandering Albatross mates for life that is to say that it is like finding its soul mate the twin flame with which both souls can nurture and grow together and so on and into the next life wherever that may take them.

The only connection Pink Floyd has with these magnificent sea birds is in one line of one song, from an album released in 1971 and might it be said this writing.

Back when I was a child which is not really so long ago, I remember there was a short lived comic going under the title of buddy it was never actually that good but it did have a couple of free gifts once or twice and this made it worth the while of buying the thing I seem to remember there was a short piece about John McEnroe the tennis player and how he rose to fame or whatever I recall a drawing of him laying up against a wall listening to music through headphones with one of those speech bubbles saying. “Pink Floyd are a great band.”

Now this was back in 1981 so a little while ago now how I have remembered that is anyone’s guess though some people claim to recall the moment of their birth.
Whenever I first heard the band’s music is another matter altogether and what that music was is something else entirely, one could make faint guesses working on what albums were released and when though that would be pretty pointless for a start there was not much music in the family either because there was no one there all the children got sent boarding school from an early age and what the parents listened to if anything was another matter altogether there was certainly no guitar or drum kit involved in it so it must have been out of home and more than likely at school or somewhere as not having a radio made for a rather quiet life especially when it came to music, which being a slightly sad thing is nothing to regret and could indeed be something to rejoice in.
The Albatrosses are some of the longest lived of all bird species many living upward of fifty years or more.
With a wingspan of nearly twelve feet the great Albatrosses easily have the largest wingspan of any bird and it is this wingspan that enables them to enjoy prolonged flight without needing to flap its wings once travelling 22 metres or more for every metre of drop, this ability enables the Albatross to travel upwards of 1,000km a day indeed the only times when the bird does flap its wings is taking off and landing, it being ill designed for continuous powered flight lacking the muscles and energy for such activity, this does make them dependent on ocean waves and currents and often they are forced to rest upon the ocean wave whilst waiting for the weather to pick up again.

Since the bands acrimonious split in 1985 or whenever it was there has been very little mention of seabirds in their music, either as solo artists or as a band though you may like to correct me here if I am mistaken. Maybe it’s time to get down and do some serious listening and take notes where necessary. Here are the lyrics in case anyone has forgotten them.
————————

—————————
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the where’s or why’s
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

Life is simply gaily fallen
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky.

Back in the day sailors considered it very bad luck to kill one of these sea birds the reason being that they were the souls of dead sailors drowned at sea.
Albatrosses have been described as “the most legendary of all birds”.[36] An albatross is a central emblem in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge where a sailor kills an albatross and is punished by having an albatross hanging around his neck.
Writing something about the band, though not as other books may have it the history the arguments and all the rest of it is though necessary at times boring and repetitive how many times does the history of the world need to be repeated ? Actually this is not the history of the world it is something more important than that as I have said my personal history of the band goes back a long way, though it was only at sixteen that I really started listening to the bands music properly when I was 16. Since then I do not think there has been a single week where I have not listened to their music at least once to some this may sound a little boring, is there anything else he listens to? Sure there is, I am just not writing about it here. There is more to this piece of work than just writing, it has been decided to include a little bit of art work as well. These are just two of the bits of work I have created centred on the band, the cuttings were obtained from an advert in a popular collectors magazine about 20 years ago yes that long maybe even a little bit more, unhappily the person who did all the cutting out of sometimes very small snippets of paper is now forgotten, a box set of artwork has also been created comprising found and recovered objects as well as mail art used in a end of year art show brief. As a whole the entire project is entitled ‘ Thank you. ’ not so much to the band but more to whom made it all possible without whose scissors this would never have even begun. It may as well be pointed out that at the time of using the cuttings service this artist was not an artist and would have laughed at any such absurd idea as doing something creative with his old bits of newspaper.
Whether I shall post the poem I have written, is another matter altogether.

pink floyd pt.1

This is only a small bit of writing here and more is in the pipeline however it would be nice to post a couple of pieces of art work as well the first one has been exhibited several times and has received mention at the Oxford Open held at Modern Art Oxford early in 2008 it was a sadness not being able to attend the opening evening due to a bout of Pancreatitis that was not much fun, seeing this on the wall later and listening to people talking about it was a thousand times better. Getting it mentioned in the review with my name next to it was even better.
Because the evening is drawing on and there is more to be written elsewhere it is time to post one more picture here.syd barret pt1

I shall write more on this man another day
